Mrs. Alpha Averill

Mrs. Alpha Averill, 103 years old, was born on January 30, 1907 in Low
Moor, Virginia. She had seven other siblings. Mrs. Averill attended
church every Sunday growing up. She taught herself how to play the
piano. She and her sister often played Way Down Upon the Swanee
River.
In 1927, Mrs. Averill married William Averill, also from Low Moor. They both inherited the Averill Store/Restaurant in Low Moor from Mr. Averill’s brother. They had three children, all boys. On Christmas Day in 1974 Mr. Averill passed away. Ms. Averill continued to run the store even after the death of her husband. Everyone at the Averill Store refers to her as Granny Averill. She worked at the store for over a half of a century and never even took a vacation. Everyone in the town of Low Moor knows Granny Averill. Some of her customers would come into the store just to see her smile. When she turned 92 years old, the people of Low Moor turned out in force for her birthday party, which was held at the store. In April of 2007 Granny Averill retired from the Averill Store at the ripe age of 100.
Ms. Alpha Averill is a resident of the Kissito Healthcare Alleghany in Low Moor where she has resided since July 2006.
