Mrs. Gertrude Heelan, 93 years old, was born in Long Island, New
York.
After school, she served as a legal secretary for a New York Superior Justice, raised five children, and was awarded Professional Education Secretary Certification. With this additional training, she became the confidential administrative secretary for three superintendents of schools.
Mrs. Heelan was active on countless political, educational, religious and social committees in Oyster Bay, New York. In 1968, the New York Republican Club elected her its first woman President. She served three terms.
After retiring in Fairfax, Virginia, she joined the Civitan International Club, the Fairfax Hospital Auxiliary, and numerous senior groups. She served 15 one-year terms as President of the Senior Citizens Club at her Fairfax church.
Mrs. Heelan is a resident at Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leesburg where she has resided since May 2009.
