Mr. Robert Brunner

- Back

Mr. Robert BrunnerMr. Robert Brunner, 87 years old, came to America from Germany when he was only four years old. He grew up in New York as an Army “brat”. In 1940, after high school, he joined the Navy and attended boot camp in Rhode Island. Eventually he trained at Portsmouth Naval Hospital to become a medic.

In November 1941 he was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Mr. Brunner remembers the bombing clearly. He and others ran into the woods for cover and once the bombing stopped had the difficult job of picking up body parts, burned bodies and tending to the injured.

Mr. Brunner retired from the Navy in 1960. To this day, at an annual ceremony held in Norfolk, he still celebrates and remembers the lives of those killed on December 7, 1941.

Mr. Brunner is a resident at Sentara Nursing Center - Norfolk where he has resided since November 2009.
