Mr. James L. RiggsMr. James L. Riggs, 93 years old, began his football career playing guard for the East Stone Gap High School Tigers. He played football for Milligan College for four years and was named team captain his senior year.

Mr. Riggs is a member of Milligan College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was head Football Coach of the Appalachia Bulldogs from 1960 to 1972. In 1968 Appalachia Football stadium was named Riggs Stadium in his honor. During his coaching career at Appalachia High School, his record was 101 wins, 25 losses, 6 ties. In 1971 his team won the State Group A Championship. Mr. Riggs was named Southwest Virginia Coach of the Year three times. He was assistant principal of Appalachia High School. In September of 2001 Mr. Riggs was named Gridiron Coaching Legend in Southwest Virginia, and in September of 2005 he received "Outstanding Leadership" recognition for life's work in athletics and service to youth which was presented by Delegate Terry Kilgore.

Mr. James L. Riggs is a resident at Heritage Hall – Wise where he has resided since May 2007.
