- Back
Mr. Carlisle Nottingham, 90 years old, was born and raised in Seaview, Virginia near Cape Charles. Mr. Nottingham graduated from Cape Charles High School in 1937 and then joined the military during World War II. After German fighters swarmed and shot down his plane over Belgium, he bailed out and broke his ankle on a tile roof and minutes later found himself a prisoner of war. He was locked up in Stalag Luft III, which is known as the setting for “The Great Escape,” where 76 POWs tunneled out. Mr. Nottingham was among them and had donated his bed slats to shore up the excavation. On January 27, 1945 German guards whisked the POWs away from a descending Russian army and his school ring was lost in the chaos of the move. Fifty-seven years later a young German came into possession of the ring and managed to track him down. The Air Force arranged for Mr. Nottingham to return to Germany and the ring was returned during a ceremony at a museum.
Mr. Carlisle Lamar Nottingham is a resident at Heritage Hall - Nassawadox where he has resided since December 2006.
