Mr.
Joseph Philip Dorsey, 75 years old, has always had a passion for
the sea and is known as Maryland’s “Old Man of the Sea”.
Mr. Dorsey opened the very first dive shop, The Diver’s Den, in Baltimore, which is still open for business. He sold diving equipment as well as taught others to scuba dive.
Mr. Dorsey has received many awards, including the record for staying underwater the longest at 29 hours and 1 minute. He was the first scuba diver in Maryland, and is NAUI certified. Mr. Dorsey donated his services to train Maryland State Police to dive and rescue. He won gold, silver and bronze medals at underwater film festivals in many places throughout the world. In addition, Mr. Dorsey is a published writer and encourages divers to take an active role in protecting the rivers, bays, streams, lakes, and seas. He is in the Divers Hall of Fame.
Mr. Dorsey is a resident at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal where he has resided since December 2007.
