Who's Who in Virginia's Long Term Care Facilities
Ms. Gertrude Ricks
- Back
Ms. Gertrude Ricks, born in the fall of 1909, had the joy of turning 101 this year! She loves to talk about her childhood days growing up in North Carolina and marrying her high school sweetheart who moved her to Virginia.
Mr. Ricks has a clear memory of living through the Great Depression. She says she believed the only reason they survived during this very sad time was because they lived in the country and were able to hunt, raise animals and grow food on their own. Ms. Ricks remembers folks who lived in town or near the cities who lost their jobs and didn’t know how to sustain themselves on their own. “We were very thrifty living in the country – we simply had to be,” she recalls. She raised four children and is surrounded by family locally in the Hampton Roads area.
Ms. Ricks is a resident at Sentara Nursing Center - Chesapeake where she has resided since September 2007.
