Mr. Hanns Loewenbach

Mr. Hanns Loewenbach, 95 years old, faced the challenge of being born
a Jew in 1915 in Germany. Life became difficult in Germany and he
witnessed first hand the atrocities which happened there. Mr. Loewenbach
was drafted into the German military but he refused to serve. In 1936,
he was arrested and transported to a concentration camp but he managed
to escape. He witnessed Kristallnacht when hundreds of Jewish
businesses, homes and synagogues were destroyed.
With financial assistance from the Jewish community in Rome, he was able to provide an escape for both his parents and himself from Germany. They settled in Shanghai and then later he settled in the United States. He is fluent in German, Hebrew, English, Japanese, Chinese, and Yiddish.
Mr. Hanns Loewenbach is a resident at the Terrace at Beth Sholom Village in Virginia Beach where he has resided since 2004.
