Mr. Sammy Terry Sr., 69 years old, was born March 11, 1940 in Java, Virginia. He was the youngest of five brothers and three sisters. Early on he demonstrated a great interest in music. His first music group was The Flying Clouds of Danville, Virginia. They sang mostly at local churches. From 1965-1990 he sang with The Sons of Calvary, and while a part of the group he wrote and recorded the song, “I’m on the Right Road Now.” This song played on many airways. From 1991-1996 he sang with The Gospel Persuader. They recorded an album and Mr. Terry wrote the song, Let’s Pray Together. In 1997 he started the group Sammy Terry and the Spiritual Highlights. That name would put them on the map. This group recorded songs that were written by Mr. Terry, including Confusion Times, God is a Good God and One Day. They played with other gospel greats such as Luther Barnes, Shirley Caesar, Lee Williams, Jackson Southerners, Keith Wonder, Boy Johnson and many others.
Mr. Sammy Terry, Sr. is a resident at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center in Danville where he has resided since March 2008.
