Ms. Eleanor G. BrownMs. Eleanor Brown, 88 years old, was admitted to Dogwood Village Senior Living almost five years ago. A charming, gracious lady, she readily spoke her mind and soon became involved in most aspects of the facility. She was pleasant and outgoing and quickly began to share her many life experiences with staff and other residents. Ms. Brown often said, “What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.” This statement truly exemplified who she was as she coped with numerous life struggles.

Ms. Brown was born on October 22, 1922 in Orange County, Virginia. She grew up in Ruckersville, Virginia with two older sisters and loving supportive parents. She was in a serious automobile accident at age 16 but was determined to recover in spite of multiple injuries and was able to finish school and graduate with her classmates. She continued her education at the Smithfield-Massey Business School in Richmond and landed a job with the Orange County Public School System where she worked for nearly 25 years. Ms. Brown was employed as a Financial Director and Deputy Clerk of the School Board.

She married W. H. “Buck” Brown, also employed by the Orange County School System and retired to North Carolina in 1978. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Brown was stricken with Guillian-Barr Syndrome which left her totally helpless. She fought back and eventually recovered. Her faith, determination and love for life were her motivators yet again. Later, Ms. Brown lost her husband of 40 years. She moved back to Orange and continued her hobbies which include bridge, gardening, crocheting and quilting. Ms. Brown also began volunteering at Montpelier, the home of James Madison, and was recognized for over 500 hours of service. She loves politics and was quite outspoken about her preferred candidates.

Ms. Eleanor G. Brown is a resident at Dogwood Village Health and Rehab in Orange where she has resided since February 2010.
