Overview

The annual VCAL Symposium is going virtual! The schedule includes a great series of live sessions on November 16 and 19. Bob VanDyk, who has been recognized for elevating assisted living issues in the long term care sector, will kick off the Symposium. Teepa Snow, Matt Cobb, and Nathan Mortier will round out the program by sharing their expertise on reducing the risk of social isolation and regulatory issues, respectively.

Social Isolation Risk Reductions

The goal of maintaining social distancing boundaries to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus is challenging for all individuals but is typically even more so for those living with dementia. This webinar will highlight the serious effects that social isolation may have on those living with brain change, including the development of depression and anxiety. The session will also discuss how to reduce these social isolation risks with activity ideas that provide meaningful connections while minimizing the potential for pathogen transmission.

Keeping Up with the New Rules in the Pandemic

Assisted living providers have had a difficult 2020 navigating the many new laws and rules affecting assisted living operations during a pandemic. Join Matt Cobb of Williams Mullen and Nathan Mortier of Mellette PC as they discuss recent new laws, rules, Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) emergency workplace standards, and DSS workplace policy notices affecting assisted living operations. They will help explain hot legal topics and identify best practices for your staff and buildings for the next few months of operations.

Registered attendees will also have access to recordings of the presentations by Van Dyk, Cobb, and Mortier.

About the Presenters

Bob Van Dyk has served as President and CEO of Van Dyk Health Care since 1994.  His award-winning company owns and operates an assisted living community with a specialty memory impairment program, a home care agency and an adult day care program for individuals with Alzheimer’s. 

Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist with forty years of clinical practice experience, is one of the world’s leading educators on dementia and the care that accompanies it. In 2005, she founded Positive Approach® to Care (PAC), a company that provides dementia care training, services, and products around the world. A core principle of PAC is that, in order to obtain the relationships and outcomes that are desired, the first and most important shift must originate with each person’s own willingness and ability to change. 

Matt Cobb, a partner at Williams Mullen, represents health care clients in a wide array of complex regulatory, transactional and business matters, including Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement issues, certificate of public need, licensure, state and federal regulatory requirements for compliance with Medicare/Medicaid, including the survey and certification process and investigations. He regularly assists clients with contracts and acquisitions. Cobb also advises clients facing False Claims Act investigations and self-reports of overpayments.

Nathan Mortier, a shareholder of Mellette PC advises clients on regulatory compliance, licensure and certification, investigations, enforcement and litigation, certificate of public need, and state board licensing and credentialing. He also has extensive experience in successfully advising and representing individual clients who are being investigated by the licensing boards under the Virginia Department of Health Professions. Mortier is a regular contributor of articles to leading health industry periodicals and legal publications.

Continuing Education

This program has been approved for Continuing Education for 3 total participant hours by NAB/NCERS—Approval #20211115-3-A71122-DL. Attendance will be monitored throughout the webinars. Each session is worth one hour of credit; credit of less than one hour will not be granted. NAB credit is only provided to registered participating attendees of the live session.
