Bill Hadden, 97
After graduating from Roanoke College with a degree in political science and pre-law, Bill Hadden served in the US Army.
Later in life, a massive stroke left him blind and partially paralyzed on his left side. Rather than letting these challenges define him, Bill became a passionate advocate for The Leader Dog School for the Blind. For more than 30 years, he traveled nearly 80,000 miles each year, visiting rehabilitation centers and schools to share his story and promote the use of guide dogs. Along the way, he was accompanied by seven loyal guide dogs, each one holding a special place in his heart.
Bill and his high school sweetheart, Jackie, shared 75 years of marriage. Together, they raised three children and now celebrate a growing family of five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Professionally, Bill worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance before founding his own investigative business. He also played a key role in establishing Calvary Baptist Church on Timberlake Road in Lynchburg, where he remains the last surviving founding member.
Today, Bill is known at The Summit for his sharp wit, warm smile, and the joy he brings to everyone around him. His story is one of perseverance, faith, and love—and it continues to inspire residents and staff alike.
