Ms. Gudi Stambuk, 95
Ms. Gudi Stambuk is a remarkable 95-year-old German lady who suffered a stroke in May of 2025, resulting in paralysis affecting her left upper and lower extremities. The doctors did not give a good prognosis, thinking her days were numbered.
Prior to the stroke, Ms. Gudi lived alone, attended Pilates, walked without an assistive device, drove herself all around town, and was very active with her family and friends. She loved to travel, especially abroad, and she and her daughters are known for their themed parties and outfits! Although she misses her independence, this doesn’t stop her from living her life to the fullest. There isn’t an obstacle that she meets that she doesn’t climb over or go around!
Ms. Gudi was always first in her class; this was very important to her. As a child, she rode her bike to a neighboring village just to attend school, where she later took a career-determining test that led her to study both child psychology and business in Tübingen. After completing a yearlong practicum, she became a full-time psychologist. After retiring, Ms. Gudi worked for the State Department in D.C. teaching the German language and culture to diplomats and officers. She is extremely proud of this, as it was one of her ways to give back to the country that she loved so much.
Ms. Gudi was motivated from the first day with her main goal to walk at her 95th birthday party here at Bay Lake, as when she moved into Bay Lake after her stroke she relied on a wheelchair for her main means of mobility. Her family and friends beamed as she walked across the room to greet her favorite pianist as he played a birthday song for her! Once she met this goal, Ms. Gudi decided her next goal would be to navigate eight steps so she could visit her daughter for Thanksgiving dinner. With her determination and the help of our amazing therapist, she not only can navigate eight steps, she can to climb the grand staircase at Bay Lake now.
Ms. Gudi was born in Stuttgart Germany and vividly remembers air raids at night during World War II and the rise of the Nazi regime in her area. They had to spend every night in the cellar as the bombs grew louder. As a defense mechanism, Ms. Gudi would pass out while hiding the cellar and was surprised each morning to wake up alive. When her family’s house became uninhabitable due to no windows and roof, and a bomb crater in their garden, her mother moved her children to Schönberg in the country where they lived with her uncle until the end of the war.
Today, Ms. Gudi is an active participant in the community here at Bay Lake and always has a smile on her face greeting her neighbors, their family members and visitors alike. She participates in all the exercise classes, art classes, and community events. This is great motivation for her fellow neighbors here in the building as they have watched her.
