Joanne Gonzalez, 70
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joanne Gonzalez was the oldest of eight children, a role that taught her responsibility and leadership from a young age. Growing up in a bustling household, she often helped care for her younger siblings, developing a nurturing spirit that would follow her throughout her life. After spending her early years in Brooklyn, her family moved to Florida, where she lived for many years before settling in Virginia.
Music was always at the heart of Joanne’s world. She earned her bachelor of art degree in music and teaching from Barry University, where she developed her skills as both an educator and musician. Her passion for the arts led her to join a local symphony, where she played the viola, her favorite instrument. She found joy and peace in every note, contributing to the harmony of an ensemble that brought music to countless audiences.
Joanne has a natural gift for connecting with young children, helping them discover the excitement of learning through music, art, and play. Her classroom was always filled with color, laughter, and song.
She adopted two children, a boy and a girl, and poured her heart into raising them. Though her marriage lasted just 20 years, she built a strong and loving family, guided by kindness, humor, and the same perseverance that had carried her through life’s many chapters.
Whether performing in the symphony, teaching a classroom of eager five-year-olds, or simply enjoying performing in the symphony, or simply enjoying quiet moments with her family, Joanne’s life was rich with purpose, compassion, and melody.
