Bobbie Mitchell Mr. Bobbie Eugene Mitchell, better known as “Bob,” was born in Danville, in 1932 into a large family. He began working at an early age to help support his family when his father passed away. He was fortunate to be able to attend local schools, but because he had to work was unable to graduate.

At 16 he enlisted in the US Army. He was stationed in Richlands, Washington at an atomic bomb plant where he served as an instructor. Although his trainees went on to fight in the Korean War, he remained stationed in the US to man a radar system. He served his beloved country for almost four years. This patriot’s doorway at Roman Eagle is marked with an American flag and others are hung inside. These were the some of the first things he placed in his room upon his admission.

After his military service, Mr. Mitchell returned to Virginia to attend a welding trade school. After gaining hands-on experience, he decided to open his own business, Danville Wrought Iron and Steel Company. He sang in his church choir at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church for over 50 years and served on the Board of Deacons.

For over 60 years Mr. Mitchell has been married to Betty, “the love of his life.” They have a daughter, Kim, and a son, Kevin. They are also blessed with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. As a resident of long term health care, Mr. Mitchell remains active at Roman Eagle. He sings in the Happy Voices Resident Choir, enjoys attending activities, and serves on the Resident Council.
