Mrs. Janice B. Brockwell
Lucy Corr Village – Chesterfield
Mrs. Janice B. Brockwell, 97 years old, was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. As a little girl, Mrs. Brockwell grew up on a tobacco farm where she often reminisces about helping her grandfather tie the tobacco in clusters in order for it to be sold in the tobacco warehouses. When she was a teenager she met Mr. Harold Brockwell and eventually left Rocky Mount. They got married on September 27, 1946 and started their life journey together. “Harold Brockwell was the love of my life,” Mrs. Brockwell said with a smile. Mrs. Brockwell and her husband eventually moved to Dayton, Ohio where Mr. Brockwell served in the military as a GI soldier during World War II. While her husband served in the war, Mrs. Brockwell worked as a Tech Controller for the pilots. After Mrs. Brockwell’s husband finished serving his time in the army in the 1950’s, they moved back to North Carolina. It was during this time that Mrs. Brockwell decided to enroll at what is known now as East Carolina University. There she studied health science and graduated as a registered dietitian. After attending school, Mrs. Brockwell and her late husband moved to Ettrick, Virginia where they made their home for over 35 years. Mrs. Brockwell began working as a registered dietitian at Stuart Circle and later retired from Johnston Willis Hospital. She is one of three siblings. She stated that she is the very last one living on her side of the family. She has two wonderful sons and two grandchildren that reside here in Virginia. Mrs. Brockwell was very active in her Ettrick community. She was an active member of Ettrick Baptist Church where she sung in the choir for over 15 years. She also was head of the Ettrick Garden Club and the Sons and Daughters of Liberty Organization. She stated that her all-time favorite hobby is gardening and making floral arrangements. She explained that in her neighborhood she was always known for keeping her yard well-manicured and immaculate. When asked if she would change anything about her life, Mrs. Brockwell just smiled, laughed, and said: “Oh I wouldn’t change my life for the world. If I did I wouldn’t have such fond memories of my life.”
Mrs. Janice B. Brockwell is a resident of Lucy Corr Village in Chesterfield where she has resided since June 1999.
