Phyllis Johnson, 86
Phyllis Johnson has been a resident of The Glebe since February of 2018. A very distinguished woman, Phyllis has made a remarkable contribution to society and is well known for her accomplishments in several states across the United States. Married post-graduation from Florida State University, Phyllis and her husband traveled the world and ventured on several visits to Europe during their family vacations. Phyllis cites her greatest successes include marrying the love of her life, Bill, having children, graduating from college, and becoming a nurse.
From teaching psychiatric nursing at Boston College, to becoming the director of the nursing program at Ohio State University, Phyllis had to overcome several challenges along the way. She noted her delay in being able to start a family as being one of the biggest pains she’s suffered. “I went through three pregnancies before my first child was born,” Johnson stated. After success with having children, Phyllis, Bill, and their two children, Christine and Alisa eventually moved here, to Roanoke, Viriginia.
Another major strain that occurred during the height of her career was that of Bill’s parents declining in health in Florida. “We had to travel back and forth with young children. It was a lot. Bill’s father had surgery that did not end well. His mother had Alzheimer’s, and we had to take care of her as well. After Bill’s father passed, we moved his mother up here to a facility closer to us. Losing them both was traumatic for Bill and I, “Johnson stated. Bill started developing symptoms of Alzheimer’s and ultimately passed away due to it.
Phyllis moved to the independent living at The Glebe after Bill passed away. She then progressed through assisted living and health care progressional transitions. She is a well-known resident who has participated in numerous resident-led groups and activities. During her time here, she has participated in therapy several times and made ample amounts of progress. So much so that she is now on the waitlist to return to assisted living!
Staff note that “PJ” is full of life and a joy to converse with. Whenever you pass her room, she will always offer up a smile and is ready to brighten your day. She is a beacon of light and love, and always ready to offer friendly advice. We are so grateful that she is part of our Glebe family!
