On Any Given Day: Leadership Lessons from Columbine and Beyond (NF & AL)
Frank DeAngelis | Principal (retired) | Columbine High School

“Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens; not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst…a spark that creates extraordinary results.” –Anonymous

The tragedy at Columbine in 1999 redefined the nation. Frank DeAngelis tells his story from the events through the aftermath. He reveals the leadership lessons he learned in the focus of an international firestorm. DeAngelis’s honest, straight-forward account provides invaluable insights into managing the after-crisis with students, staff members, community members and never ending media attention. A positive attitude and a passion for his job, allowed him to work at Columbine from 1979 to 2014. He shares how he was able to build a community that worked together for his kids—the students at Columbine High School. Compassionomics:  The Platform for Employee Engagement (NF & AL)
Karen Cook, RN, | Leadership Speaker, Director | Huron Healthcare

While some may say “compassionate leadership” is a soft skill, it is actually the opposite. It takes leaders who have the courage, strength, mindfulness, and discipline to truly build a culture founded on compassion. Compassionomics is the scientific evidence that caring makes a difference. Compassion matters for residents through better clinical outcomes; for resident care through higher quality, lower costs, and better financial sustainability; and for those who care for people by promoting the resilience of healthcare providers and staff and lowering burnout. Compassion involves an authentic desire to help and is foundational to creating an environment of trust. Karen Cook will review the issues in the workforce today, the impact of employee engagement on the organizational outcomes, and three strategies to show intentional compassion and build trust/engagement with staff. Ultimately, this session is about hardwiring the behaviors and processes that lead to a culture of higher clinical quality and reliability, safe and efficient care delivery and operational excellence from the resident, employee, and physician perspective.

QAPI And Medication Management (NF)
Mary Chiles, RN, RAC-CT, QCP | Chiles Healthcare Consulting, LLC

2019 marked the full implementation of the Requirements of Participation, the “mega rule,” including new requirements related to quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI).  With a regulatory mandate to focus on high-risk, high-volume, or problem-prone areas, many facilities will prioritize medication management when developing performance improvement activities. Medication management is a multi-faceted process that requires collaboration across the interdisciplinary team including prescribers, pharmacists, and nursing. Each step of the medication management process creates opportunity for error and potential risks to your residents and poor survey outcomes. Mary Chiles will explore opportunities for your facility to collect and use data in an effort to minimize adverse drug events and risks associated with medication management. She will review current survey findings related to medication management and discuss quality improvement strategies to promote compliance and reduce medication-related risks.

Health and Safety Protocols

(Updated October 4, 2021)

Ensuring the well-being of our attendees, exhibitors, presenters, and staff is of paramount importance and a shared responsibility. VHCA-VCAL requires all attendees follow any federal, state, or local health and safety standards after your registration and up to and through the end of the Fall Summit & Expo.

In our continuing efforts to ensure the health and safety of all present at the VHCA-VCAL Fall Summit & Expo and the Managing Medicare Managed Care Intensive, all attendees, exhibitors, and presenters will be required to provide proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. (To be considered fully vaccinated, you must be two weeks past your second dose in a two-dose series (Pfizer or Moderna) or two weeks past a single-dose vaccine (J&J/Janssen)).

Fully vaccinated attendees may email proof of vaccination to linda.pretlow@vhca.org at any time, but no later than 72 hours prior to the event. After that, you must show proof of being fully vaccinated when picking up your registration badge. You can easily access a certificate of vaccination at the VDH COVID-19 vaccination record portal. Photo or paper documentation is acceptable. Once vaccination status is verified, fully vaccinated attendees need not show proof at future events. This policy is subject to revision pending changes to federal or state guidelines regarding booster shots.

Please note that per CDC and VDH guidance, even individuals who are full vaccinated should wear a mask indoors in public in areas of substantial or high transmission. At present, nearly every locality in Virginia meets the definition of “substantial or high transmission.” VHCA-VCAL will monitor this guidance for any changes.

The association requires that anyone who experiences COVID-19 symptoms or has been exposed to a COVID-19 positive individual within the last 14 days prior to their attendance, stay home to avoid the risk of infecting others.

All attendees should practice proper hand hygiene throughout their time at the event.

To ensure the health and safety of guests and employees at The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center will be implementing a variety of protocols and practices. Click here to learn more.
