An October 10 Clinician Letter from the State Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Shelton aligns Virginia guidance on the COVID-19 vaccine with the CDC’s schedules.

• Of note, individual-based decision-making allows for immunization coverage through all payment mechanisms, including entitlement programs; however, insurance coverage should be verified before vaccination. This includes programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and others.
• Pharmacists can now administer COVID-19 vaccination without a prescription to persons aged three years and older, now that the CDC immunization schedule includes the 2025-26 COVID-19 vaccine. 

The importance of vaccination: As respiratory viruses become more prevalent during the fall and winter months, the importance of staying up to date on vaccinations is critical, especially for those residing and working in long term care.

• COVID-19, influenza (flu), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pose significant health risks to older adults and immunocompromised individuals.
