Congratulations to the 2018 D. A. “Woody” Brown Award Winners

Congratulations to the 2018 winners of the D.A. “Woody” Brown Community Involvement Awards.  Winners demonstrated their commitment to developing engaging, creative programs and communications for their residents and the broader community.  Each year awards are given in four categories.

Year Round Program This category is for on-going activities including daily, weekly or regularly scheduled activities conducted between June 2017 and May 2018.

Fewer than 100 beds

  • 1st Place – The Landmark Center, | Stuart
  • 2nd Place – Dogwood Village of Orange County Senior Living
  • 3rd Place – Wayland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center | Keysville

More than 100 beds

  • 1st Place – Highland Ridge Rehab Center, LLC | Dublin
  • 2nd Place – Sentara MeadowView Terrace | Clarksville
  • 3rd Place – Sentara Woodview | South Boston

National Skilled Nursing Care Week / National Assisted Living Week:  Every year, National Skilled Nursing Care (NSNCW) begins on Mother’s Day – quite appropriate since so many long term care residents are women and mothers. The theme for NSNCW for 2018 was Celebrating Life’s Stories. National Assisted Living Week (NALW) occurs in mid-September. Heartwarming themes and festive events are scheduled and facilities host celebrations to honor the occasion. The 2017 NALW theme was Family is Forever.

  • 1st Place – Heritage Hall – Virginia Beach
  • 2nd Place – Radford Health & Rehabilitation Center
  • 3rd Place – Dogwood Village of Orange County Senior Living

More than 100 beds:

  • 1st Place – Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Inc. | Danville
  • 2nd Place – Blue Ridge Therapy Connection | Stuart
  • 3rd Place – Richfield Recovery & Care Center | Salem

Special Event: The Special Event award is designed to recognize a one-time activity such as a holiday-specific open house or a fundraiser held sometime between June 2017 and May 2018. The award is granted based on program design and its ability to unite residents and the community.

Fewer than 100 beds:

  • 1st Place – South Roanoke Nursing Home – Ms. South Roanoke
  • 2nd Place – The Oaks – Hoe Down | Salem
  • 3rd Place – Joseph C. Thomas Center – Then/Now | Salem

More than 100 beds:

  • 1st Place – Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Inc. – Bible Reading | Danville
  • 2nd Place – Lucy Corr – Sock Hop | Chesterfield
  • 3rd Place – Manassas Health & Rehab Center – Senior Giving Tree

Facility Newsletter: This award recognizes excellence in facility newsletters. Newsletters are a special form of communication that is essential both inside and outside of the center. Staff, residents, family members and the greater community all rely upon them. Facilities must submit three different issues of their newsletter published between June of the past year and May of the current year. Judging is based on content, readability, creativity, special features, relevance, timeliness and resident/employee involvement.

Fewer than 100 beds:

  • 1st Place – Autumn Care of Madison
  • 2nd Place – Dogwood Village of Orange County Senior Living
  • 3rd Place – Wayland Nursing & Rehabilitation Center | Keysville

More than 100 beds:

  • 1st Place – Inova Loudoun Nursing & Rehabilitation Center
  • 2nd Place – Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Inc. | Danville
  • 3rd Place – Paul Spring Retirement Community | Alexandria

Congratulations to all our winners!  The awards banquet will be held in Roanoke on September 26, 2018 in conjunction with the VHCA-VCAL Convention and Trade Show
