House and Senate Budgets Include Medicaid Funding for Nursing Center Care

House and Senate Budgets Include Medicaid Funding for Nursing Center Care

A view of the Virginia State Capitol Buiding.

This week the House of Delegates and Virginia Senate passed their respective amendments to the biennial budgets.  At this juncture, it appears that nursing centers will benefit from over $20 million in additional Medicaid funding.  Both chambers adopted Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s proposal to provide $10.9 million for the fiscal year (FY) 2018 inflation increase for nursing centers.  Adding to that, $9.8 million has been provided to mitigate some of negative rebasing impact by raising the direct and indirect care peer group prices and fixing a geographic peer group issue from the Medicaid rebasing that could have caused nursing centers in the Danville area massive cuts in the coming year.  All funding is contingent upon passage of the final budget by the General Assembly and acceptance by the governor.

We are very grateful that the Senate Finance Committee and the House Appropriations Committee demonstrated their support of funding for nursing centers in their budgets.  This action reflects legislators’ understanding of the important care you provide to your residents and the impact Medicaid rates have on your ability to provide that care.
