Earlier this week VHCA-VCAL Vice President of Quality Improvement April Payne shared advice to help members complete their PASRR/Level 1 screenings for residents who don’t already have one on file. Nursing facilities have until July 1, 2019 to make sure the screenings are completed as outlined in this Medicaid Memo.

Tip 1: Identify who in your organization will be conducting the screenings.

From now through July 1, 2019 is a temporary transition period to complete these screenings for all residents who currently reside in a nursing facility who do not have a Level 1 screening. Screenings can be completed by a nursing facility staff member who has medical knowledge of the resident and knowledge of the medical terminology in the Level 1 screening.

Tip 2: Make sure your policies and procedures are updated.

Your updated policies and procedures should include the following:

• Identify who on your staff (by role) is qualified to conduct the screenings.
• Specify the form your center will be using to complete the Level 1 screening for any new admission to a Medicaid-certified nursing facility for any payor source other than Medicaid. You can use the DMAS 95 form.
