Alice Decker, director of human resources and compliance at Birmingham Green, has been selected for AHCA/NCAL’s 2021/22 Future Leaders in Long Term Care program. The year-long program offers training and guidance to long term care/post-acute (LTPAC) professionals. Decker’s long term care career spans 20 years. She has served for multiple years on VHCA-VCAL’s Education, Nurse Scholarship, and VCAL Committees.

Prior to serving as director of human resources and compliance at Birmingham Green, a role she has held since 2016, Decker worked for major senior living operators such as Sunrise Senior Living Communities, Erickson Living Communities, and Watermark Retirement Communities.

Reflecting on what drives the passion for her work, Decker explains, “One of the benefits of working in this industry that I enjoy so much is my interactions with people at every level, from the residents to the family members, employees, and stakeholders. Seeing how I can impact their quality of life is so unique and special to me. Each day, I go home with a sense of satisfaction knowing that I have somehow (directly or indirectly) improved the quality of someone’s life be it a resident or an employee.”

A native of Serra Leone, Decker has lived in Virginia with her husband and family for over two decades. She earned her bachelor of science in economics from Fourah Bay College University, holds a certificate in human resources management from Villanova University, and has completed numerous training and certificate programs in human resources and compliance.

Since 2004, AHCA/NCAL has hosted LTPAC professionals in the Future Leaders program. Selected participants both demonstrate leadership potential and represent the interests of both state and national LTC providers. The program covers the latest theories and practical applications in quality management, customer satisfaction, and leadership. The year-long program kicks off with a two-day symposium, “Future Leaders of Long Term Care in America.” Selected participants have demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in representing the interests of LTC providers at the state and national levels.
