It has been repeatedly stated that the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS Co-V2 virus was a once in a lifetime event. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the September 14 and 16 webinar series, Pandemic Review and Planning: Moving Forward by Looking Back, PointClickCare’s Jayne Warwick will review considerations long term care facilities may undertake as plans are revised for the future. She will help you dive deeper into the tools and relationships that your facility needs to have developed in order to successfully ride future waves of COVID or the next pandemic.

Pandemics have occurred at intervals of several decades during the 20th century. The most severe pandemic was the so-called “Spanish Flu” caused by the H1NI virus and estimated to have caused 20–50 million deaths worldwide in 1918-1919. Less severe pandemics occurred in 1957-1958 and 1968 caused by the H2N2 Influenza A virus and the H3N2 influenza virus, respectively. Both of these pandemics are estimated to have caused 1-4 million deaths. Another pandemic is an unfortunate inevitability. We need to learn from COVID-19 and be prepared for that probability.

The novel coronavirus has brought with it many challenges not previously encountered in managing facility outbreaks or even localized epidemics. For the first time for many long term care facilities, both residents and staff were significantly impacted by this global pandemic. Gaps in service, resource planning, and communication were brought to light. And this pandemic is not over yet. SARS Co-V2 still circulates, causing facility outbreaks and further deaths.
