Telemedicine May Reduce Hospital Visits Among Dementia Patients in Senior Living

Provider Magazine reports research published in JAMDA indicates telemedicine may be able to reduce avoidable emergency department (ED) visits among senior living residents with dementia. The study “evaluated the impact of a high-intensity telemedicine program that delivers care for acute illness on ED use rates for senior living community residents with dementia.” (JAMDA is the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association.)

The researchers “found that individuals with dementia who had access to high-intensity telemedicine had a greater decrease in all ED visits over time than those without access to it.” Moreover, “residents participating in telemedicine programs also had fewer ED visits that resulted in hospitalization.”
