Virginia State Police: Register to Use Online Non-Criminal Justice Interface for Background Checks

To satisfy employment background check requirements, you can use the Virginia State Police (VSP)’s Non-criminal Justice Interface (NCJI) to search Virginia criminal history records using name and other descriptive information from remote PCs with internet access.  Using this system will save you time in obtaining background check information since it eliminates the time needed to prepare and mail forms.

VSP encourages AL providers to contact ncjihelp@vsp.virginia.gov or 804.674.4683 to register and sign an agreement with the Department of State Police to allow them to participate in the NCJI, which will expedite the receipt of criminal records for new employees.

On July 14, VHCA-VCAL, the Department of Social Services and other assisted living provider representatives met with staff from the Virginia Department of State Police.  The discussion included the possibility for AL providers to receive criminal record reports electronically rather than waiting for delivery via post mail, which leads to the delay in onboarding new employees.  Captain Tricia W. Powers, Division Commander, Criminal Justice Information Services Division of VSP shared that the VSP has been working to develop a secure portal for users to receive criminal history records rather than having to wait for the record to be delivered via post mail; however, there is no timeline for development and implementation at this time.  VHCA-VCAL will provide updates on this issue as they arise.

As a reminder, Virginia Code requires that ALF obtain the criminal history record report directly from the Virginia State Police Central Criminal Records Exchange. More information is available in the DSS Assisted Living Technical Assistance.
