Board of LTC Administrators FAQ: Requests for Continuing Education Extensions

Board of LTC Administrators FAQ: Requests for Continuing Education Extensions

Corie Tillman Wolf, executive director of the Board of Long-Term Care Administrators has shared an FAQ on continuing education extensions in light of cancellation of training events because of COVID-19. A licensee who needs an extension may request one in writing to the Board prior to the March 31 renewal date.

Read the FAQ in its entirety:

A recent continuing education course that I was scheduled to attend was cancelled due to concerns surrounding COVID-19.  Will the Board consider requests for extensions to the continuing education requirements for renewal of licensure?

Pursuant to the Board’s Regulations, 18VAC95-20-175(D) (NHA) and 18VAC95-30-70(D) (ALFA):

  1. The board may grant an extension of up to one year or an exemption for all or part of the continuing education requirements due to circumstances beyond the control of the administrator, such as a certified illness, a temporary disability, mandatory military service, or officially declared disasters. The request for an extension shall be received in writing and granted by the board prior to the renewal date.

Individual licensees who wish to request an extension should submit their request in writing to the Board prior to the March 31 renewal date. To expedite processing, licensees should direct requests to the Board’s email address, ltc@dhp.virginia.gov.

It should be noted that the Board’s Regulations do provide for a portion of a licensee’s continuing education hours to be fulfilled via Internet or self-study courses, or by using excess carry-over hours from the previous year:

  1. Up to 10 of the 20 hours may be obtained through Internet or self-study courses and up to 10 continuing education hours in excess of the number required may be transferred or credited to the next renewal year.  (18VAC95-20-175(A)(1)18VAC95-30-70(A)(1))
