Responding to Questions about New AL Community Directory

U.S. News and World Report and Caring.com have launched a directory of 8,700 assisted living communities. This directory does not capture the tens of thousands of assisted living communities that do not participate with Caring.com. We have talking points to help you respond to questions about it.

According to the press release announcing the directory, it “gives families the opportunity to compare assisted living in order to choose the right community for their loved one depending on their specific needs and lifestyle.” The directory includes information about health services, activities and amenities offered at each residence as well as patient and family reviews from residents and their families for almost all (licensed) assisted living communities in the country.

The Virginia Department of Social Services website includes an online search for licensed Virginia ALFs.

Key Messages

  • We need to continue to help consumers find and access long term care – an issue not many Americans are thinking about or preparing for until it’s needed.
  • We encourage everyone to talk with their loved ones about their preferences, and ensuring plans are put in place before the need for long term or post-acute care arises. Learn how to start that conversation at careconversations.org.
  • Providers should be upfront with consumers about their services, fees, policies, and overall experience.
  • Directories and online reviews are only the start of anyone’s search for long term care. The best way to know if an assisted living community is a right fit for you or your loved one is to see it for yourself.
    • Take a tour: talk with staff about your specific care needs; ask other staff and current residents about how they like the community; sample the food; and look in on a social activity.
