Responding to Inquiries about Discharges

4

Kaiser Health News’ Navigating Aging column recently published an item regarding assisted living discharges: Assisted Living Kicks Out The Frail ‘Cause ‘We Can’t Take Care Of You Any Longer’. To help you respond to any inquires you might have received about discharges, refer to our talking points.

  • Providers should be upfront with consumers about their care abilities (and limitations) and encourage a robust, ongoing conversation with residents and loved ones about their needs-especially as they evolve-concurrent with their individualized care plans.
  • Whether an assisted living community is able to care for a resident should they develop more complex medical needs varies by community as well as by state. If a resident has any of the conditions or care needs specified in Part V – Admission, Retention, And Discharge Of Residents of Virginia’s Standards for Assisted Living Facilities, the assisted living facility shall not admit or retain the individual.
  • Assisted living communities do all that they can to make these transitions as comfortable and as seamless as possible to ensure the well-being of the resident. That is why many assisted living providers form relationships with other health care providers, or are located on campus of care, so that seniors can more easily transition.
  • We need to be vigilant about helping consumers understand the nuances of long term care – an issue not many Americans are thinking about or preparing for until it’s needed.
