Over the coming weeks: We will highlight different sections of the MDS Item Sets version 1.18.11 and the draft MDS 3.0 RAI User’s Manual version 1.18.11 issued on April 3, 2023.

• Substantial changes were made to several sections which will have an impact on survey and reimbursement.
• Check out what you need to know about changes to Section A.

Changes to Section A include:

• Incorporation of the Standardized Patient Assessment Data Elements (SPADES).
• Race, Ethnicity, and Preferred Language, which allows for standardized data collection across all health care settings. 
• Two new QRP Measures which capture Transfer of Health (TOH) Information to the provider and to the patient, beginning on October 1, 2023, on all Part A PPS discharges.

Action for facilities:

• Review the AHCA MDS Section A resource document, which outlines key changes, coding instructions/RAI guidelines for each item, and actions to consider for implementation across your facility.
• Develop a training plan for your facility to ensure all staff impacted by the changes are trained in them.
• Sign up for upcoming VHCA-VCAL programs focused on MDS.
  • MDS Training Workshop | MDS Basic – Part I | June 14-15, 2023: This workshop will focus on the role of the MDS in the LTCSP, offer line-by-line coding instructions for crucial sections, and more.
  • MDS Training Workshop | MDS Basic Part II | July 12-13, 2023: This workshop is designed for MDS coordinators with at least six weeks of experience who need to learn more about the importance of accurate coding.
  • RAI Manual Changes for October 1, 2023 | July 27, 2023: Judy Brandt will help you understand the upcoming changes to the RAI Manual and the interdisciplinary process required to capture the new items.
