Parkinson: Nursing Homes Dedicated to Quality Care Despite Media Rhetoric

In a guest column for McKnight’s Long Term Care News Mark Parkinson, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL, made the case that “News outlets are reporting on anecdotal stories of terrible care” when “just the opposite is happening.” He stresses the negative stories about nursing homes are rampant, which Parkinson considers myopic, stating, “A sensational story of a horrible failure in care is more newsworthy than the thousands acts of kindness and love that occur every day.”

Parkinson emphasizes that nursing homes are “getting dramatically better at providing quality care” and “are committed to continuing this quality improvement.” He adds that out of 24 clinical outcomes CMS calculates for nursing homes, providers “have improved on 20 in recent years,” and that the AHCA Quality Initiative has been instrumental in aiding these improvements.
