Mr. Joseph Hoggard, 73

Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital – Norfolk
Mr. Joseph Hoggard was born in Norfolk. While attending high school, he worked in his father’s restaurant doing a variety of jobs. When his father retired, he took over the reins of the business and named it The Ship’s Cabin. The restaurant in the Ocean View neighborhood became a well-known landmark. The Ships Cabin can boast that it was the first AAA 4-diamond restaurant in southeastern Virginia! Mr. Hoggard, who became a well-respected restauranteur in Tidewater, always felt his best when his customers were genuinely satisfied with their dining experience. Mr. Hoggard hosted many celebrities including Henry Mancini, Mickey Rooney, and Dudley Moore. He was at the helm of The Ship’s Cabinfrom 1967-2000.
After selling the restaurant, he moved to France where he lived for four years. While living in Nice and Paris, he learned about wines and wine pairings and had the pleasure to meet Julia Child. Upon his return to the U.S. he became a restaurant consultant, and managed the very popular Ruth’s Chris restaurant
in Virginia Beach. After five years, Mr. Hoggard heard Mexico “calling his name.” He then moved to a very small town outside of Guadalajara where he earned a certificate to teach English as a second language to the townspeople. In all the places he has lived, he enjoyed Mexico the best, citing the food, the weather, and the people as reasons he loved it best.
