VHCA-VCAL has been made aware of recent concerns over NF residents’ consent for the purchase of dental coverage. The cost associated with needed dental services is generally allowed as a patient pay deduction by local Departments of Social Service (LDSS). This remains true even though the CCC Plus managed care organizations cover some dental services for adults (they do not typically provide mobile dentistry to NFs). 

VHCA-VCAL was asked to remind NF staff that consent to purchase dental insurance or needed dental services must be obtained from the resident or the authorized representative prior to coverage/treatment. This should be documented by the NF staff in the medical record when submitting a DMAS-225 Patient Pay adjustment to the LDSS.
