Mrs. Lucille “Lucia” Samia, 102 years old, was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. She graduated from Clara Hilt School of Design in Boston. Mrs. Samia designed and made dresses for exclusive Boston clientele and was an apprentice under a master Italian tailor where she learned to make suits and coats. It was during her career that she met her husband when she made a formal dress for his date to an event. Mr. Samia asked her out after catching a glimpse of her. They had two children and were married for almost 60 years before he passed.
Perhaps the most defining characteristic of Mrs. Samia is her never-failing positive outlook on life. In the last 102 years, she has witnessed and endured every major hardship that has occurred in our country’s history. She recalls having to ration food during both World Wars and the struggles of the Great Depression. Mrs. Samia remembers the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights movements and how happy it made her to see the country become more equal. Throughout every hardship, she has maintained her bright outlook and never once lost the rose colored glasses that she sees the world with.
To this day, Mrs. Samia still embraces everything life has to offer. She is a positive beacon for those around her, always offering a word of encouragement to someone struggling or extending a welcoming hand to join in the fun. It isn’t her 217 pin high score in Wii Bowling that draws crowds of residents to join in on the fun, but her big smile and warm heart.
Mrs. Lucille Samia is a resident of Fauquier Health Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Warrenton where she has resided since September 2012.
