Overview

With the disruptions to the regular survey cycles during the pandemic, the rollout of the Long Term Care Survey Process, and staff turnover, many nursing facilities are struggling with being survey ready.

April Payne and Colleen Toebe of Pathway Health will present this two-part webinar series to help you make sure you are as ready as you can be for survey. Virginia-specific information regarding survey activity and trends will be included. The second session will cover the revised guidance, the CMS survey tools provided, and the strategies needed for a successful survey.

Who should attend?

This series is intended for administrators, DON, nurse managers, MDS coordinators, and members of the interdisciplinary team (IDT).

Session 1:  June 7, 2023 | 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

The annual survey process in long term care occurs every nine to 15 months. The survey team evaluates the care and services provided to residents to ensure the quality of care and life. The annual survey is unannounced and may include complaint investigations, occurrence reports, and consultation with the ombudsmen to identify any special concerns or problems that need additional review.

This session will focus on strategies to always be survey ready.

  1. Review off-site survey preparation.
  2. Discuss the role of the MDS assessment in resident selection.
  3. Examine the process of determining the scope and severity of deficiencies.

Session 2:  June 8, 2023 | 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Since many facilities were last surveyed, CMS revised the LTCSP guidance, implemented new regulatory provisions, and strengthened guidance on the current procedures. Additionally, CMS updated survey documents, including the Critical Element Pathway (CEP), that assist in investigating areas of concern. The guidelines address multiple areas including staffing levels, infection prevention, and control, culturally competent care, abuse, and resident rights.

This session provides insight into these changes, updates from CMS, and strategies to engage the IDT in survey preparation.

  1. Identify three strategies for a successful survey.
  2. Examine the changes in the Long-Term Care Survey Process.
  3. Review the survey tools provided by CMS.
