Mr. John Fray and his twin brother, Jack, were born October 3, 1938 in Madison County, Virginia. He spent his career of 34 years working in juvenile detention where he mentored many young people.

In his 60 years of service with the Madison County Volunteer Fire Company, he served as treasurer, Marshall, president, vice president and associate member officer. Mr. Fray also led efforts to raise funds, purchase property and design the current firehouse. In 2006, he received the James O. Clore Award presented annually to the Member of the Year. In 2016 Mr. Fray and his brother were honored for their 60 years of active service with the Company.

Mr. Fray has also been active with the rescue squad. In 1977, he was elected Vice President of his district in the Virginia Association of Rescue Squads. In 2016 he was named to the charter class of District 10 Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads receiving Life Membership, which denotes the highest level service and commitment to the EMS mission. A long-time member of the Jaycees, Mr. Fray has also volunteered across the state teaching and building leadership among Jaycee members.

Mr. Fray has been a resident at Dogwood Village since October 2016. He was previously admitted to the facility in February 2016, but was discharged in July 2016. In October 2016 he returned to the facility for additional skilled care and rehabilitation. Mr. Fray stated that he wouldn’t be where he is today if he had not come to Dogwood Village.
