Heatherwood Retirement Community – Burke

Mr. Paul Porter, a native of Pennsylvania, is a popular and cheerful veteran who

always has a kind word or bit of trivia to impart. The former captain of his basketball team enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943. He flew missions as a Radio Operator and Gunner for a B-17 Bomber. On his eleventh mission he was

shot down over Germany, and was captured. He was held as a POW for six months. He endured many moves from camp to camp as well as a grueling three-week forced walk before his final camp was liberated by General George Patton.

When Mr. Porter was discharged from the service, he attended Gettysburg College and studied economics. He landed a job with DuPont as an advertising executive. He worked there for 37 years. He and his wife raised a son and daughter, and he now has four grandchildren. Never one to sit still, the day after he retired, he started to work as a bus driver for the DuPont Mansion.

At Heatherwood you can often find Mr. Porter relaxing on the patio, enjoying a fine cigar, and reading the paper. Everyone knows that if they want a passionate discussion on current events they should talk to him!
