Administrator Licensure Renewal Reminders

Administrator Licensure Renewal Reminders

March 31 is the annual renewal deadline for individuals licensed by the Virginia Board of Long Term Care Administrators.

  • The Board issued revisions to the regulations affecting assisted living and nursing home administrators effective December 21, 2022 including adding a requirement that at least two hours of continuing education for each renewal year shall relate to the care of residents with mental or cognitive impairments, including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
  • The Board’s guidance on what counts as “live” continuing education credit effective December 23, 2021 still stands.

Remember: The Board requires administrators to complete 20 hours of approved continuing education each renewal year.

  • Up to 10 of the 20 hours may be obtained through Internet or self-study courses and up to 10 continuing education hours in excess of the number required may be transferred or credited to the next renewal year.

The Board’s guidance related to “live” continuing education hours is included in Guidance Document 95-13, Guidance on Completion of Continuing Education. It states:

The Board interprets these provisions to mean that, in addition to the hours that may be obtained “through Internet or self-study courses,” at least 10 hours of continuing education are required to be live coursework hours.  These live coursework hours may be satisfied by attendance of (1) in-person programs or courses or (2) real-time, interactive programs delivered via teleconference or webcast where there is an opportunity to interact with the speaker.
