Karen Stanfield: A Closer Look at the Board of LTC Administrators

VHCA-VCAL members represent the long term care profession on a number of state boards and stakeholder groups.  These boards and groups rely on the subject matter expertise VHCA-VCAL members provide as they deliberate on regulatory issues and/or provide input on issues facing the industry. Karen Stanfield, Senior Vice President of Operations with Saber Healthcare Group, LLC has served on the Board of Long Term Care (LTC) Administrators for six years.  She shares her thoughts on the role of the Board and why she’s found giving back to the profession is so important.

Q: What does your service on the Board of LTC Administrators involve?

We do a lot of hearings where we hear about assisted living or nursing home cases where individuals are defending their licenses or are part of a complaint against a building or a survey issue.  Being part of the hearing process has made me think of what we are doing in our buildings and making sure we are doing things right.

Q: What have you liked best about serving on the Board of LTC Administrators?

The Board gave me the opportunity to serve on an NAB [National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards] task force. I was part of the group that reviewed the domains of practice to develop the new Health Services Executive (HSE) criteria.  I got to meet many people from different states, including people who wrote the exams.  Seeing things from the whole U.S. perspective brings a different perspective on how different companies and buildings operate.

Q: What could someone get out of serving on the board?

If you want to be involved in the changes taking place with nursing home administrators, it’s a good board to be involved in.  You get to know what’s going on with licensure, workforce issues.  It’s also a good public service opportunity for those who’ve worked in the industry their whole career–a chance to give back.  I have enjoyed my time on the Board.

Karen Stanfield also serves on the VHCA-VCAL Board of Directors.
